Why Self-Care Isn’t Selfish

    Fill Your Own Cup First!

We’re all pretty good at looking after others, aren’t we? Making sure the kids are fed, checking in on mates, hitting those work deadlines. But when it comes to ourselves, well, we often get pushed to the back of the queue. That’s where self-care comes in – and no, it’s not selfish; it’s absolutely essential for keeping your mental health in tip-top shape.

Self-care isn’t about grand gestures or expensive spa days (though those are nice!). It’s about consciously doing things that nourish your mind, body, and soul, to recharge your batteries and protect your well-being. It’s about making sure your own cup is full, so you actually have something left to give.

When you consistently put yourself last, your energy dwindles, your mood dips, and you become more vulnerable to stress, burnout, and anxiety. Self-care, on the other hand, helps you:

    • Manage stress better: Gives you resilience to handle life’s curveballs.
    • Boost your mood: Those little moments of joy and relaxation make a big difference.
    • Improve focus and energy: When you’re recharged, you’re more effective.
    • Strengthen relationships: When you’re looking after yourself, you have more patience and presence for others.
    • Prevent burnout: It’s your personal defence against running on empty.

The beauty of self-care is that it looks different for everyone. What recharges one person might exhaust another.

So, how do you figure out your self-care sweet spot?

    1. Start small: You don’t need a whole day off. Could you find 10-15 minutes just for you?
    2. Listen to yourself: What do you really need right now? Quiet time? A good laugh? To move your body? To connect with someone?
    3. Mix it up: Self-care can be physical (a walk, a stretch), emotional (journaling, talking to a friend), mental (reading, puzzles), spiritual (meditation, nature), or social (connecting with loved ones).
    4. Make it a habit: Schedule it in if you have to. Treat it like a non-negotiable appointment with yourself.
    5. Forget the guilt: Remind yourself that looking after you is looking after everyone else in your life too.

My little bits of joy, like clicking Lego bricks together or getting a head-butt from a purring cat, are my personal self-care superheroes. They might seem small, but they make a massive difference to my mental state. What are yours? Is it potting around in the garden, listening to music really loud, drawing, going for a surf, or just enjoying a cuppa in peace?

Whatever it is, make time for it. Your mental health is too important to neglect. Fill your own cup first, and watch how everything else starts to flow a bit more smoothly. You deserve it!

    Take care of yourselves, everyone!
