While mental health social workers, psychologists, and counselors all contribute to mental health support, they do so from different perspectives and with different areas of expertise. Choosing the right professional depends on the specific needs of the individual and the type of support required.

Medicare:
Accredited Mental Health Social Worker: Through the BetterAccess Initiative, eligible clients can access Medicare rebates for 10 individual sessions and 10 group sessions. Some private health insurance rebates may be available.
Psychologist: Through the BetterAccess Initiative, eligible clients can access Medicare rebates for 10 individual sessions and 10 group sessions. Private health insurance rebates are also available.
Counsellor: Private health insurance rebates may be available.
Education and Training:
Accredited Mental Health Social Worker: Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Social Work, with additional specialization for clinical practice.
Psychologist: Bachelor’s degree followed by a Master’s or Doctorate in Psychology, with extensive training in assessment and therapy.
Counsellor: Diploma, Bachelor’s, Master’s degree with a focus on practical therapeutic techniques. Anyone can also call themselves a Counsellor without any qualifications.
Scope of Practice:
Accredited Mental Health Social Worker: Focuses on mental health therapy, social services, and case management, with an emphasis on the social context.
Psychologist: Specialises in psychological diagnosis, assessment and therapy, with a strong research and clinical focus.
Counsellor: Provides counseling and support for personal and emotional issues, often with a focus on practical guidance.
Registration and Accreditation:
Accredited Mental Health Social Worker: Must be registered with AASW, may seek additional clinical accreditation.
Psychologist: Must be registered with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA), and often a member of APS.
Counsellor: Can be registered with professional associations such as ACA or PACFA but is optional.
Work Settings:
Accredited Mental Health Social Worker: Works in various settings including community health and social services.
Psychologist: Found in clinical, academic, and research settings.
Counselor: Operates in private practice, schools, and community centres.
